Wow – what a festival! With 157 submissions from filmmakers all over the world, Out For Blood 2020 has been our longest and biggest yet. We had four nights of spooks and scares, with a total of 21 films screened, a panel discussion, an academic video essay on queer horror, and a Halloween quiz. We are so proud of the work that has gone into creating the festival, and we really hope you’ve enjoyed it.

Due to covid-19 restrictions, we were not able to share the festival in person as we usually do. We missed being in our usual haunt, The Blue Moon pub in Cambridge (pop in for a pint if you’re nearby – keep supporting local and small businesses!) but we have been so excited to share Out For Blood with people from afar who haven’t been able to join before.

We could not have put on the show without the incredible talent from the filmmakers – your imagination and skills are the backbone of the festival!

Being online has been challenging, but has meant we were joined by a fantastic team of ghoulish hosts. A huge thank you to Bucky (your_pal_bucky on Instagram), Adam All (adamall_drag on Instagram and Twitter), and Mr. Wesley Dykes (mrwesleydykes on Instagram and Twitter). If you enjoyed their hosting, please do follow them on social media to support their future endeavours.

We were also able to screen additional treats like the ‘Pride and Pathology: Queer Horror and Mental Anguish’ video essay by Dr. Darren Elliot-Smith. You can find more of Darren’s work in his new book ‘New Queer Horror Film and Television’. We also shared a women and non-binary folk in horror panel discussion which is available to watch free on on our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6Lwq_aMeHJ4RcA3B6brdKg

It might surprise you to know that Out For Blood is run by two people – Sam, the director, and Elecia, the assistant director, and a very small team of volunteers. Out For Blood is not-for-profit, and any money raised goes back into the queer community and back into the running of the festival. We run the festival every year out of our love of horror and our wish to create and maintain safe spaces for our community. Big thanks to our resident illustrator Hayley (hwillustrator on Instagram) for always bringing us excellent spooky posters! We also want to say thank you to Alvina and Becky, our quizmaster Emily, and the family and friends who have supported us along the way.

We hope to see you next year for Out For Blood 2021!

Stay safe  – and stay spooky!

Sam and Elecia
